From the page: ""So many people expect the Olympics will help make China's economy even more prosperous. But in China, the government operates everything. As a result, the Olympics are not that efficient, economically speaking," said Zhang Ming, a professor of international relations at Renmin University."

Photography, and mixed media (wood carvings on found doors, antique from China) by artist Zhang Huan at Pace Wildenstein in NYC. I love the combination of materials in this performance artist / photographer / artist's latest works on tour in the US. These doors have traditional and political meanings in Chinese culture. Go check out the show, or read this review in PaperMag for more details.

OK. So a Chinese student at Duke attempted to talk to both sides of a debate -- Free Tibet v. Pro-China / Olympics -- at a campus protest. The next day, for trying to mediate, a students' forum online had posted her personal ID, and a photo of where her parents lived. Back in China, the threats began flooding through, and she was labeled as a traitor. Today? She's in the New York Times! Talking to the media after you've been screwed up by it? Courage. Grace Wang -- thank you for trying and providing more of your point of view after all you've been through already.

From the page: "While China has faced violent attacks from Muslim groups, unflinching social controls have prevented the emergence of a sustained terrorist threat in the country. Some analysts have suggested that widely publicized discoveries of weapons caches and terrorist plots are part of a larger effort to present domestic unrest as a form of international terrorism that the world should help China suppress."

Cau Guo-Qiang's profile in the Deutsche Bank art magazine site. I love the "transient rainbow" he constructed of fireworks in a NYC sky. And...I'm definitely going to have to check out his show at Guggenheim while it's in town. Someone tell me though? Why haven't I heard his name all over US news programs? AGAIN I can't pronounce what I admire and what fascinates me.
